Vertigo is a condition where it feels like you are moving, but you are not. It is similar to dizziness, but more accurately described as when it feels like the room is spinning around you.
A familiar way to feel vertigo is after you’ve spun in circles for an extended period, and then stopped. The feeling continues for some moments. In some people this feeling happens without trigger, or after moving their heads in specific ways.
Vertigo can be related to many different causes, both common and some rare. An Osteopath will run through a complete medical history and examination which will either diagnose the cause of your vertigo and begin treatment, or may identify some people who need a referral for further diagnostic testing.
Common causes of Vertigo for which an Osteopath can provide successful treatment include:
- Whiplash associated disorders
- Chronic neck pain
- Cervicogenic dizziness
- Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (B.P.P.V)
B.P.P.V relates to a build-up of endo-lymph in the inner ear and is relatively common. It can usually be successfully treated by a sequence of exercises.
